Thailand refuses to grant Patents for Medical Marijuana

Pharmaceutical companies bid to Patent marijuana for medical use has been refused.

The decision has come after a decree, directing the Department of Intellectual property to cancel all patent applications for medical marijuana, was issued by Thai PM Prayuth Chan-ocha.

The decree has asked to invalidate all the patent applications relating to medical marijuana or to any other plant having a similar molecular structure till legislation on medical marijuana comes into force.

This comes as a relief to people who were protesting grant of patents to foreign companies, fearing monopolization.
